Insights

- In order to create impactful stories, a well-outthought production is needed to steer the story in the right way for the player experience

- As a designer, I am  like a wave of ideas which could result in a lot of chaos if I work alone formats and theories I can hold onto are very important to keep me in check and to create a proper product

- When developing lights within a game plan out how much light you would like to bake to cut development time

How to make brain uploading experienceable?

Inspired by the effects of future technologies on future scenarios this research took form. This in order to start a discussion about how we develop towards a human-centred future. It is important to ask this question to get more insight into how we can make future scenario's more realistic and testable in our current society. In order to get insights into how we can make these scenario's experienceable, we need to test the cause and effects on people and test new possible effects that can come up by the future context. This creates a guidebook into how production needs to take form in order to create a realistic experience that would start a discussion which would offer proper insights. In this project, the subject is chosen because of the more easy conflict that can take place because there is a bigger contrast to our current scenario. This would create a more clear picture of what to do when you make the experience and whatnot. Furthermore, we narrowed this down to the idea of identity perception. What makes you you?

Uploading the brain could create a massive amount of uselessness

We tested how the changes in society would affect our identity perception. We picked two big key players. One of these is the loss of physical identity because of the possibility to change the robotic avatar you live in and the loss of identity through skill. Since living as software would mean that you could upload skill software and be just a good as somebody else. All of these resulted in a scenario which has a big increase in the feeling of uselessness. The counterplayers that came in order to battle uselessness, for example, came in the shape of the feeling of friends and family. These people would give you value in this situation.

A first-person upload experience

So we know how we can create a realistic scenario of the future scenario in which brain uploading is possible and have researched what the effects of a few key players would be looking at the changes in identity perception. We know that we need to create a sense of uselessness because of the loss of value in physical and skill identity. Within the narrative, the idea of developing uselessness while counterbalancing this with the feeling of togetherness would take the main role. as of now, the narrative is still in the works but the upload room has been made with real-time lighting within unity. And the first, the second and third act have been planned out into three steps. The intake, the procedure and a situation in which effects of brain uploading on society are experienceable.

maquette testing physical identity

The narrative construction of the self describes identity through the idea that we make our identity through the decisions that we make in the past, now and future. I tried to steal my own face in a narrative in which a clone of me (which could be possible in the brain upload scenario) would perform better and in the process would steal my face (physical identity). This was a tool to provoke discussion in how people would react to these situations to get more insights into how I can create a more well-outthought production
